![]() ![]() How did you get involved with the Austen Project? In December 2011, some British editors reached out to me . and said, "We think that you'd be well-suited to tell an updated version of Pride and Prejudice, but if there's another book you'd be interested in we're open to that too." It was Christmastime, and so over Christmas I reread Pride and Prejudice, and right away I thought, This would be really fun to work on, and I'd get to live inside Pride and Prejudice for two or three years. Curtis recently talked to about why she chose to take on something so iconic, why she loves The Bachelor, and who she'd want to play Darcy in an Eligible movie. The book is part of the Austen Project, which asks contemporary authors for their own modern takes on Austen's classics (previous entries include Emma by Alexander McCall Smith and Sense & Sensibility by Joanna Trollope). Now Curtis Sittenfeld, author of American Wife, Prep, and Sisterland, has put her own spin on the classic in the new novel Eligible, which reimagines Elizabeth Bennet as an independent magazine editor, Fitzwilliam Darcy as a reserved but handsome neurosurgeon, and Chip Bingley as a Bachelor-like reality show alum. It's also been adapted about a million different ways, and as recently as February showed up again on the big screen, albeit with zombies. More than 200 years after publication, Pride and Prejudice is still one of the best romantic comedies of all time. ![]()
